Female wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi), one of the greatest European spiders. Originally from the Mediterranean they are moving up North last decennia. Possibly it has one thing to do with the international earth warming. The very first observation of this species in the Netherlands for example was in 1980. Yesterday, i’ve seen 5 of this wasp spiders (in Belgium, exactly where they are protected by law). Quite impressive, the females are a lot bigger than the males. The males typically loose their life or some legs while mating. &quotAfter they lost their package of sperm, they are utilised and useless&quot, the spider ladies (photo) stated to me.

  3. we laymen measure from head to tail, not just the abdomen. what is the leg span of this creature. I was scared by one in 1955, I was almost 4yrs old and it gave birth to my phobia and fascination. I can watch but cannot touch or be close to one.

    Mooi vastgelegd op de gevoelige plaat.
